This year, Buddha’s Birthday, which is celebrated in Korea as a national holiday, much like Christmas, fell on May 5th, which also marks Children’s Day, a holiday observed annually on the same date. In a rare gesture of generosity, the government granted us a two-day respite: yesterday and today.
Sadly, I wasn’t able to fully enjoy both days off. I’ve been immersed in translating a history book and guiding several students recently accepted into American graduate programs, helping them prepare through lessons in academic essay writing. Today also happened to be the day of my monthly volunteer work. I returned home late in the evening after sharing a few cups of sweet makgeolli with fellow volunteers, our laughter softening the weariness of the day.
I, however, was able to spend a few hours this afternoon to ride my bike and take in the beauty of Seoul in spring. Have a great day, everyone!
